Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD), which has 32 campuses spanning across San Diego, has set out to have 10 projects designed to LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. SUHSD made the decision to accelerate the replacement of some outdated buildings on the Montgomery Middle School campus with a state-of-the-art, sustainable and durable campus addition. LPA was charged to exceed the LEED Gold standards and to target LEED for Schools Platinum certification.

Three years later, Montgomery has a stunning new two-story classroom building, featuring 18 new classrooms, a library and media center, community-building cafeteria and student counseling center. The project also features beautiful outdoor amenities, including a large central courtyard, landscaped stormwater bioswale and impressive HVAC systems. The new campus has become a source of pride for students and families, creating a new legacy of technology-fluent, creative minds. In July 2015, the school was awarded LEED Platinum certification.
