The Palomar College Learning Resource Center (LRC) is centrally located on the San Marcos, California, campus between the two major pedestrian crossroads. The LRC applies a simple material palette composed of terracotta tile, metal panel and glass. The design of this 85,000-square-foot, multi-level facility has three components: library, academic technologies and tutoring. The components will be stacked into four floors, announcing this special resource and destination from the quad. The library is located on the ground floor—for easy access—and sky level—where views of the surrounding valley become a dramatic backdrop to reading areas and community rooms. The two floors of the library are linked by the Academic Technology Center and Tutoring Center in the middle floors.

The project includes a new 400-ton chilled water plant that will efficiently meet the cooling demands of the LRC, as well as two existing campus buildings, with spare capacity to serve future buildings. An integrated design approach allows numerous sustainable design strategies to be introduced such as natural daylighting, natural ventilation and passive solar controls. The project is pursuing a LEED Gold certification.
